About Sonia Tinsley

Dr. Sonia Tinsley returned to Louisiana College in the fall of 2017 serving as the chair of the Allied Health Division, and Assistant Professor of Health and Exercise Science. Dr. Tinsley has spent over twenty-five years in education, twenty of which have been in higher education teaching in the field of health education. Her education includes a B.S. from Louisiana State University at Alexandria, M.Ed. in Health Promotion from Northwestern State University and a Ph.D. in Health Studies from Texas Woman’s University.

Over the years, Dr. Tinsley has made numerous presentations regarding coordinated school health, teacher stress, and female college athletes and stress. She also secured funding to implement coordinated school health initiatives in the state of Louisiana from 2008 - 2010. Dr. Tinsley has received several distinguished awards for her teaching and service to the profession of health education. In 2010, she was named the College Health Educator of the Year for the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 2010.

Areas of research include physical activity and academics, teacher stress, college athletes and stress, worksite wellness and coordinated school health. Dr. Tinsley is married to Jason Tinsley. They have one son, Landon. She enjoys staying active with her family and working in the yard!
