2002 Distinguished Alumni

Dr. Thomas Howell

Class of 1964

Howell is a 1964 LC graduate who has taught at his alma mater since 1966. He is holder of the Richard L. Crowell Professorship in Pre-Law and is chair of the Division of History and Political Science.

He is also a Fulbright Scholar who has taught at the University of Iceland. He's been named Teacher of the Year at LC three times and was last year's Campus Favorite "Outstanding Professor."

Howell and his wife, Donna, also an LC grad, have two children, Catherine Jewel and Judith Hazel.


Dr. Ken Johnson

Johnson is a local physician who also serves as a leader at the Family Practice Department of the Rapides Regional Medical Center. He is an ardent volunteer, giving of his time both at his alma mater and abroad. He has for the last 15 years ministered to students at LC in his role as campus physician.

He has also participated in medical mission trips to Mexico every year since 1990.

Johnson and his wife, Heather, also an LC grad, have two children, Jason and Kelly.


Dr. Joseph and Earlene Strother

The Strothers are both educators and are being honored for their passion for teaching. Mrs. Strother has been a teacher of gifted students for the last 15 years for the K-12 system and has worked with Teacher Education programs in the Univ. of North Carolina system, Univ. of Georgia, and Louisiana Tech.

She has numerous honors to her credit, including a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Arts to study Greek literature, art, and music; an award as the Lincoln Parish Special Education Teacher of the Year; and selection to the Louisiana Governor’s Educational Transition Team in Professional Studies.

Dr. Strother was professor and director f the School of Art and Architecture at Louisiana Tech for many years and retired from that institution in 1997 as professor emeritus. He has exhibited his paintings in 10 one-man shows (two of which were this September and October) and in more than 50 national and regional juried exhibitions with many awards. His work is represented in 10 permanent public collections.

Together, the Strothers have taught on three occasions in China. Mrs. Strother has been given Foreign Expert status at both the Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Science and Technology of China Graduate School and Academic Sinica.
