Division of Nursing
Studying Nursing at Louisiana College
Louisiana College's Division of Nursing emphasizes the
preparation of nurses as leaders prepared to serve mankind through various
professional approaches and to serve God through examined faith.
Degree Programs
A Louisiana College liberal arts education prepares students to be in
tune with the world around them, to be able to better see and understand
the needs of the patients they serve.
Louisiana College nursing graduates receive a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing degree, which prepares them for leadership and management roles
and is required for entry into a master's or doctoral level program.
Proven Excellence
LC nursing students and graduates excel in their studies, and Louisiana
College has the statistics to prove it.
- The retention rate (the number of those freshmen who declare nursing
as a major and then graduate with a nursing degree) is 81%.
- The graduation rate (upper division nursing students who graduate
from LC) is 94%.
- The pass rate of graduates taking the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt
is 92%.
- The pass rate of those taking it on the second attempt is 100%.
- The employment rate for nurses upon graduation from LC is 100%.
LC graduates are heavily recruited from Louisiana and neighboring states.
"Because the demand for nurses is so high everywhere, it's easy to
find meaningful, challenging, and rewarding jobs," says Annie Martin,
a 2002 graduate.
"From hospital practice to government service, from nursing to counseling
to research and beyond, my career opportunities are boundless."
Faculty
Louisiana College Nursing faculty bring to the table experience both as educators and as nursing professionals. Each has a different area of nursing specialization, and students will learn practical nursing from them.
Faith-Based Learning
The faculty at Louisiana College have the freedom to include their faith
into their teaching so that students learn to incorporate faith and God
into their everyday care. When students graduate, they are well-equipped
to deal with the whole person not just the medical condition of their
patients.
The teaching at LC is both research and evidence-based practice, meaning
students will learn not just the 'hows' of nursing but also the 'whys,'
which will allow them to be better nurses.
"The nursing program at LC exemplifies the blend of academic training
and service projects that gives real heart to an LC education," says
Dr. Alex Ferry, chair of the Division.
"Students can expect far more than clinical skills - they'll gain
empathy and a sense of humanity that will enable them to connect in a
meaningful way with the people they serve," he says.
Service Opportunities
All LC nursing students have the opportunity to participate in a variety
of service projects at locations including Enterprise Baptist Church,
the Working People's Free Clinic, and the Manna House.
"Our students volunteer in free clinics and provide health care
to children and the elderly both here in Louisiana and at the Rio Grande
Baptist Retreat by crossing into Mexico to conduct health clinics for
impoverished communities," Ferry says.
The Total Package
Louisiana College is widely known for its quality academic program and
for its spiritual environment. Nursing graduates experience the best of
both of those worlds, leaving LC prepared to face the challenges of a
health care profession with the compassion needed to treat patients as
individuals.
