Louisiana College 2009 Homecoming

 

Pineville, LA. … Louisiana College will celebrate Homecoming 2009 on Thursday, October 15^th through Saturday, October 17^th. This year’s theme is Welcome Home…Again.   Homecoming activities this year will include special reunions, luncheons, and fun activities, like the annual tricycle race, homecoming parade and tailgating. (see schedule below)  At 5pm Saturday, October 17^th the LC Wildcats will take on the ETBU Tigers at in Wildcat Stadium.

 

Each year, Louisiana College recognizes the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients and the Wildcat Athletic Association (WAA) Hall of Fame inductees during Homecoming. This year’s Distinguished Alumni recipients are: Donna Burnley Cavanaugh (1977) Larry Jeane (1970) and John David Murphy (1979). This year’s WAA Hall of Fame inductees are: Jimmy Rea (1960) J. Matt Miller (2006) and the entire 1958 Rice Bowl Championship Football Team.

Pineville, La. … The Louisiana College School of Nursing and Allied Health is pleased to announce the first ever “commissioning” ceremony for  nursing students. Students in their junior year and who are about to enter clinicals will participate. The ceremony is on Monday, September 28^th at 5 p.m. in Bolton Chapel, located on the first floor of Guinn Auditorium on the campus of Louisiana College.

Dr. Kimberly Sharp, Dean of the LC School of Nursing and Allied Health, explains, “the ceremony is a special time for nursing students, and is reminiscent of previous “capping” ceremonies. The term commissioning refers to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), so it has a threefold application.  The first is to establish a link with history, both with former LC nursing alumns and with nursing’s 19^th century founder, Florence Nightingale. Secondly, the commissioning will emphasize the importance of using nursing as a ministry for Christ. Third and lastly, the ceremony will dedicate the students as ambassadors for Louisiana College. “We are consecrating them for the very special professional role that is nursing.”

             Pineville, LA…The Louisiana College debate team recently competed in the largest debate tournament in the history of Henderson State University.  LC’s young squad travelled to HSU in Arkadelphia, Arkansas where they went up against colleges and universities from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. 

            In the novice division, sophomore team members, Zach Veulaman and Travis Kliewer advanced to elimination rounds, while Ashley Dufrene, Jesus Carrillo and Dustin Carter advanced to quarter finals.  Additionally, Carter was awarded first place speaker out of fifty-two competitors in his field. In the professional division, debate coach Scot Loyd was a semi finalist.

            “Our novice team has made great progress,” said Loyd, “and will soon be moving into the varsity division and (our) freshman members are looking very good in speaking ability, argumentation and competitiveness.” Loyd went on to say that although the team is relatively young, they are “poised to carry on the winning tradition of LC debate this year and for years to come.”

Next month, the team will compete at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (Oct. 9-11) and LSUA (Oct 23-25). 

 

 

 

 

Pineville, LA… Louisiana College Division of Christian Studies announces Dr. Jim Shaddix as guest lecturer for the annual Sanders Lecture Series, September 22-24, 2009. Lectures will be at 11:00 a.m. each day in Guinn Auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.

 

Dr. Shaddix, Senior Pastor of Riverside Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado, hosts a daily broadcast called Hope for Today and has authored books including The Passion Driven Sermon and Power In the Pulpit, co-authored with Dr. Jerry Vines, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to his position at Riverside Baptist Church,Shaddix was Associate Professor of Preaching, as well as Dean of Chapel at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Pineville, La. … The Louisiana College Office of the Registrar announces the highest enrollment at LC in the 103 year history of the school. “There are 1,458 students currently enrolled,” explained Carolyn Dennis, Louisiana College Registrar, “this includes first-time freshman, the new accelerated nursing program, the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program and returning students.” These numbers translate into a 33% increase in enrollment over this time last year and an all-time record high enrollment.

 

“Louisiana College is experiencing growth,” said Dr. Joe Aguillard, President of Louisiana College. “This growth is attributed to many different factors, including new programs and students who are returning to LC as well as new students who have made the decision to attend LC over other public or private schools in Louisiana.”

 

The steady rise in overall enrollment numbers is as follows:

The Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, the first graduate level program at Louisiana College, has more than doubled in size over the last year. “The MAT program is filling a need,” said Dr. Mike Shamblin, Director of Alternative Certification, “right now there is a critical need for certified teachers in our schools and this program is preparing the next generation of teachers.”
