Objectives and Description of Course:
Selected students and faculty from Louisiana College travel to Karamay,
China, to teach conversational English to junior and senior high students.
Karamay is a modern city of about 260,000 people and is the center of
a large petroleum industry. Every Chinese student in the program will
have some speaking, writing, and reading knowledge of English. Each student
and faculty member from Louisiana College will be teamed with a Chinese
teacher of English. Together they will conduct a class of 30-40 students
each weekday morning for a month. During the month in Karamay, the LC
team is housed in apartments on the university campus. Meals are provided
by the university.
In Karamay, the LC team is being hosted by the university administration,
faculty, and students. Thus several field-trips, banquets, and other types
of programs are held at which the LC team are honored guests.
On the way to Karamay the China Challenge team tours Bejing and Xian.
They climb the Great Wall, visit the Forbidden City, see the Terra Cotta
Warriors, attend a Chinese ballet, and have many other cultural opportunities.
On the return trip the China Challenge teams spends three nights and two
days touring Hong Kong.
Prerequisites/Eligibility/Requirements:
Student and faculty members apply to take part in the program. The China
Challenge Committee, composed of faculty and student members, select the
participants in an interview process. Students must have completed English
101 and 102 with a grade of "C" or higher. Participants are
required to take part in orientation and training prior to departure for
China, and students will also register for Education/Religion 395, Cross
Cultural Experiences, at the time they go to China. After completion of
the teaching assignment and China travel, students will receive three
semester hours of credit for Cross Cultural Experience. All participants
must prepare and teach daily lessons.
Cost:
In 2004, the cost for each participant was about $3,000, including food,
lodging, most sight-seeing excursion, round-trip airplane tickets, hotel
taxes, tips, and airport fees, but not including individual spending money
or the cost of tuition for Education 395.
