Division of Human Behavior
Social Work
Students may earn a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree, which prepares students for entry-level generalist social work practice. The social work program has been accredited since 1993 by the Council on Social Work Education.
Accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education allows for graduates to become registered social workers in the State of Louisiana or to apply for advanced standing in graduate schools of social work.
Personalized instruction is focused on eight major areas:
1) values and ethics,
2) diversity,
3) populations-at-risk and social and economic justice,
4) human behavior and the social environment,
5) social welfare policy and services,
6) social work practice,
7) research, and
8) field education.
A senior year field placement consists of 450 hours of supervised experience in such practice settings as family counseling agencies, drug treatment centers, hospitals, school-based health centers, mental health programs, corrections, and agencies serving the disabled.
Graduates of the social work program hold key positions in both public and private agency settings, providing direct and indirect services. Several graduates have integrated their Christian faith with knowledge and skills of the profession of social work to become missionaries and to work in other church-related areas.
Opportunities in social work are expected to continue to expand, especially in the areas of medical social work and social work with the elderly.
