Grants

Federal Pell Grant
Amount: Varies ($400 - $4,050 Annually)
Eligibility: Financial need and U.S. citizenship (or permanent resident)
Frequency of Application: Annually

This non-repayable type of assistance is provided by the federal government in varying amounts. Actual award is based on an analysis of available family resources versus the cost to attend Louisiana College. Application is made at Louisiana College through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Forms are available from high school counselors or the LC Office of Financial Aid. A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent directly to the family from the Processing Center. Upon receipt, review the information and if correct, sign and send SAR to the Office of Financial Aid.

Academic Competiveness Grant
Amount: up to$750 1st year (earned 0-29 credit hours), up to $1,300 2nd year (must have earned at least 30 credit hours).
Eligibility: U.S. citizen, Pell Grant recipient with financial need, enrolled full-time in a degree program, enrolled in first or second year, have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study (after January 1, 2006, if in first year, and after January 1, 2005, if in second year), if a first year student, not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program and if a second year student, have at least a 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale . Can receive the grant for only 2 semesters during the first year and 2 semesters during the second year . The Department of Education notifies the student of potential eligibility and then notifies the financial aid office of the student’s potential eligibility.
Frequency of Application: Annually through the FAFSA.

National Smart Grant
Amount: $4,000 for each of the Junior and Senior years
Eligibility: U.S. citizen, Pell Grant recipient with financial need, enrolled full-time in a degree program, major in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language (click on the following link for a list of all the eligible majors: http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/GEN0606A.pdf), have at least a 3.0 GPA in the coursework required for the student's major. Can receive the grant for only 2 semesters as a junior and 2 semesters as a senior. The financial aid office will identify potential eligible students.
Frequency of Application: Annually through the FAFSA.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
Amount: Varies ($200 - $4,000 Annually)
Eligibility: Pell Grant recipient with financial need and U.S. citizenship (or permanent resident)
Frequency of Application: Annually (Priority application by March 31)

These grants (non-repayable) are available to students of exceptional financial need. Preference must be given to the neediest student with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Award amounts cannot exceed one-half the total assistance from all sources provided to the student. Application is made through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Grant (LEAP)
Amount: Varies
Eligibility: Louisiana resident, financial need, acceptable academic qualifications, U.S. citizen, matching self-help, full-time student.
Frequency of Application: Annually (Priority application by March 31)

These grants are available to students who are bona fide residents of Louisiana and whose need has been determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Entering freshmen must possess a 2.0 high school grade point average or an overall GED score of 50. College students must possess a 2.0 cumulative and semester GPA. Recipients must be full-time students.
