Music Performance and Competition Opportunities

One vital part of a music education at Louisiana College is the opportunities students have to perform their music in front of an audience. These sessions teach skills that mere classroom instruction cannot. And so there are many performance opportunities given to music majors.

  • Chorale – Chorale is a select group of singers, representing all divisions of the college. Members are chosen by competitive auditions from the entire student body and represent several academic disciplines.

  • The Louisianians – This men’s chorus has been in existence since 1947 and has a strong group of male singers. Concerts are presented each semester, and the group is known for their humorous presentations.

  • Red River Wind Symphony – The Red River Wind Symphony brings together Louisiana College students with professional and community musicians to perform a varied repertoire of both classic and contemporary symphonic band literature.

  • Wildcat Marching Band – The marching band serves to provide entertainment and school spirit at Louisiana College athletic events.

  • Opera Workshop – The Opera Workshop is designed to give students experience with operatic literature, stage craft, and basic acting techniques.

There are three competitions that have been held regularly throughout the years at Louisiana College. Each highlights a different discipline within the Department of Music.

  • Alsup Voice Competition – The Alsup Voice Music Award was begun by Mrs. Helen Rougeau in 1972 in memory of her former professor N. C. Alsup as a means of encouraging vocal excellence.

  • Caudell Cup Competition – One of the oldest and most prestigious awards at Louisiana College the Caudell Cup is awarded for excellence in piano performance. This competition was begun in 1922 and endowed in 1980 by the late Mrs. Kite Caudell of Pineville.

  • Composition Competition – The Student Composition Competition is sponsored by the Department of Music at Louisiana College. The contest is open to all music majors who have finished at least two years of harmony studies.
