Department of Music
Studying Music at Louisiana College
Louisiana College’s Department of Music seeks to lead students to an understanding of themselves through the development of God-given talents. Graduates are equipped for a life of service to God and their fellow man as they seek careers in churches or schools or as they continue their education in seminaries or graduate schools.
Degree Programs
Louisiana College music majors have several degree options. They may earn a bachelor of music degree with majors in church music, music education, vocal performance, and piano performance. They may also earn a bachelor of music in piano performance with an emphasis on piano pedagogy. Also offered is a bachelor of arts degree with a major in music and a bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis on pre-music therapy (This degree requires additional study in order to be certified as a music therapist.).
Curriculum
All of the music graduates applying to graduate schools have been accepted, and Louisiana College’s music education graduates readily find employment in the school systems. Outside of the traditional vocal and instrumental studies, students are able to study instruments such as the trombone, trumpet, and cello.
Students have the opportunity to travel outside of the United States by way of the Chorale, a co-educational choral group with representation not only from the Department of Music but from many of the other disciplines on campus. The Chorale tours internationally every four years.
Faculty of Instruction
In the Department of Music, 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold terminal degrees in their field. The professors are also active musicians and noted pedagogy experts.
Facilities
The Music Department is housed in the Weathersby Fine Arts Building which was completely renovated in the mid-1990s. The music theory lab has 10 computers which aid in the learning and composition of music theory, and the practice studios are equipped with pianos. A concert grand piano is located within the intimate and acoustically-viable Presser Recital Hall.
Performance and Competition Opportunities
Music students need to be able to perform in order to hone their craft, and LC music majors are given countless opportunities to do just that. There are several
performance groups that students can participate in, and there are two annual performance competitions for students. Students (and the Central Louisiana community) are also treated to the free performances of many professional musicians. Such concerts give students the chance to study professional artists.
