Studying Journalism At Louisiana College

As the world of journalism faces challenges from the transition to an online world, Louisiana College is embracing that change by offering students a fresh approach to journalism education. Currently, LC is moving to an online version of its student newspaper, The Wildcat. The online version is anticipated to be fully functional by mid-term of Fall, 2009. The website will be: www.wildcatsmedia.com

In the classroom, students will learn up-to-date writing and reporting skills from faculty whose expertise has been developed in the real-world setting. Our effort to develop the next generation of journalists comes with the understanding that students must be given the necessary tools for success both in and out of the classroom. Our faculty makes extensive use of professionals in various applications of journalism (print, broadcasting, Internet, public relations, and advertising) from both the Central Louisiana Community as well as from across the United States.

Finally, our students will be challenged with the need for higher “intangibles” among journalists – those which extend beyond having a computer and access to the Internet. Ethics, objectivity, and legal ramifications are a major focus of the LC journalism experience.

Student Publications

The purpose of student publications is to provide laboratory experience in publishing for students enrolled in the journalism program. To be true to the educational objectives of the journalism program, this laboratory experience will embody the response of a free press to the informational needs of the academic community.

The Wildcat

The campus newspaper has been traditionally published weekly. However, beginning in the Fall of 2009, The Wildcat will transition primarily to an online version. The website will be: www.wildcatsmedia.com Written, edited, and published by student staff members, the newspaper provides a laboratory experience for the development of journalistic skills. Scholarships are available for specific staff positions. For more information, call (318) 487-7597.
