Biography

Dr. Charles L. Quarles is Vice President for the Integration of Faith and Learning, Chair of the Division of
Christian Studies, and William Peterson Carter, Jr. Research Professor of New Testament and Greek at Louisiana
College. Quarles is an experienced pastor, missionary, and theological educator. After serving as a pastor for
over a decade, he served as a missionary for three years in Bucharest Romania. He has served as a short-term missionary
in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, and has taken multiple mission trips to Russia. He has published scholarly articles in
such journals as New Testament Studies, Novum Testamentum, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus,
Bulletin for Biblical Research, Catholic Biblical Quarterly and many others.
In the last several years, he was involved in two different debates with John Dominic Crossan, co-founder of the widely
publicized Jesus Seminar, on the issue of the
historical reliability of the Gospels. The most recent of these debates recently appeared in a volume published by
Fortress Press. In 2004 he was recognized by his peers at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as the Outstanding
Research Professor of the Year. In 2006 he was invited to offer the Swanson Lecture on Spirituality at the University
of Calgary where he debated Professor Anne Moore, wife of James M. Robinson, on the historical reliability of the
Gospels. In 2009 he delivered the Distinguished Christian Scholar lectures at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary
on the topic of Matthean Christology. Chuck is the editor or author of several books including most recently Buried
Hope or Risen Savior: The Search for the Jesus Tomb and the forthcoming book An Illustrated Life of Paul. He is co-author
(with Andreas Kostenberger and Scott Kellum) of The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: A Comprehensive New Testament
Introduction. Dr. Quarles is a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of the University of Mississippi where he received the University’s
highest awards in both of his majors. He received his Master of Divinity Degree with Honors and his Ph.D. in New Testament
and Greek from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife Julie have three children, Rachael, Hannah,
and Joshua.
