Central Curriculum

The Central Curriculum is an educational experience common to all Louisiana College students. It is designed to convey information, stimulate curiosity, enhance creativity, and emphasize a moral accountability in responsible decision making.

The curriculum provides a foundation of liberal studies courses which introduces students to major methods of inquiry and establishes a context which will allow students to integrate learning into a meaningful framework in harmony with faith. To achieve this ideal, the Central Curriculum helps students accomplish goals in the following areas:

  • Aesthetics: An appreciation of the creative significance and cultural context of the aesthetic dimension
  • Communication: Written, oral, and technological communication skills that reflect logic, clarity, and compassion
  • Critical Thinking: An ability to think analytically, logically, and creatively and to utilize a variety of approaches to problem solving
  • Global Awareness: Knowledge of the diversity and complexity of a global society
  • Historical Perspective: An understanding of the past and its relevance to the present and the future
  • Universe, Society, and Self: An understanding of and appreciation for the ways in which we know the physical universe, society, and ourselves
  • Values and Ethics: A heightened awareness of values, ethics, and responsibility in life’s choices

Beyond the Central Curriculum, Louisiana College graduates will have accomplished the following additional goals:

  • Skills: The development of skills basic to a chosen profession or field of study
  • Lifelong Learning: An appreciation for the value of a life-long learning process
  • Student Life: The achievement of psycho-social development through participation in student organizations, athletics, and extra curricular activities

In order to evaluate the college’s effectiveness in student attainment, specific objectives and measures of accomplishment are developed in all areas of the college. Changes are continually implemented which improve the overall effectiveness of the college. The college is committed to providing the personnel, services, resources, and facilities sufficient to support these improvements.
